Women-owned label IMG Records has teamed up with Airbnb for a one-of-a-kind experience, the WMN/N/SND concert series. The series is described as an event “allowing artists to connect with the reason they create in the first place. Stripped down sets and perfect acoustics courtesy of the sponsor Sennheiser, allow for connection and easy listening.” Music and Other Drugs attended the very first WMN/N/SND event featuring artists Tangina Stone and Liana Bank$ at Canal Street Market in SoHo, New York.
The night began with an acoustic set from Tangina Stone. Tangina recently released her debut album Elevate, and has become an international success, especially in Japan. Tangina kicked off the set with her song “By the Sea.” Tangina told us the song was inspired by a conversation she had with her grandma about “New York City, and the difficulties of being in the music industry.” Tangina’s voice pierced into our hearts as the words left her lips and entered into our ears. The lyrics to Tangina’s songs are personal, and you can feel her story from beginning to end. After “By the Sea,” Tangina followed up with her single “Anxious,” which is about her dealing with anxiety. The song “Anxious” is said to be a “reminder for her to have nothing to be ashamed of and to hold herself accountable.”
Through Tangina’s set she opened the floor for questions and we asked “what is your music writing process?” Tangina responded, “my favorite way to write music is on the subway train and record my ideas on my voice notes.” She ended her set with her song “Black Boy,” a song about the relationship with her father. “Black Boy” seemed to be one of Tangina’s most personal songs. You could see the emotion on Tangina’s face and could feel each raw emotion as she sang each lyric.
After Tangina’s set, it was Liana Bank$ turn to bless the stage. Music and Other Drugs have been long time fans of the Queens-born green-haired songstress ever since her debut record, “LVLUP.” Liana opened up with her newest single “Bad Manners.” She described “Bad Manners” as a “drunk night song when you have the courage to say everything that you feel.” Bank$ stepped out of her comfort zone performing an acoustic set for the first time. The acoustic set allowed Liana Bank$ vocals to shine. After “Bad Manners,” Liana sang “People Like Me,” the Caribbean-flavored single, which features Ayo Jay. Although Liana was performing an acoustic set, that did not stop her from giving us a bit of choreography.
The night finished with Liana Bank$ performing her single “Ghost.” Talking about the track Liana admitted “when she goes to parties she is usually one of the first people to leave, or go ghost.” The visual for “Ghost” has already garnered over 37k views on YouTube, and is one of our favorite songs from Liana Bank$. Liana announced her new project Apt 210, which is set to be released very soon. After seeing Liana Bank$’ acoustic set, we see the growth of the budding indie artists, and are excited to see what is next.
