On Thursday, March 9th at 8:00 PM, the tangerine tinged lights dimmed low at New York’s Mercury Lounge on East Houston street. A sold-out crowd gathered together to hear the incredibly talented 19-year old singer, Sabrina Claudio, sing tracks from her debut EP, Confidently Lost. The environment felt like we were in Sabrina’s living room and she was giving us an intimate up close and personal view into our heart and soul. Sabrina opened the show with the first track on the EP called “Too Much Too Late.” Singing each lyric with vulnerability and passion, the crowd were swaying from side to side singing every word that Sabrina sang to us. Moving right along she hit the crowd with the sensual and smooth track “Tell Me.” Sabrina took us to another space and time and we felt like we were in a night club/lounge back in the 1940’s, when singers just captivated you with their voice and let their voice tell a story.
Sabrina told a story last night and we were all following along with her every word. The crowd slipped into a trance once Sabrina decided to cover Hiatus Kaiyote’s track “Borderline With My Atoms.” Sabrina has been inspired by the group for some time now and we were blown away by her taste in music at such a young age. One of our favorite moments of the night was when she covered Robert Glasper and Jill Scott’s collaborative track “Calls.” She put the young crowd on to something they may not have heard and she did Jill Scott justice.
Sabrina also teased fans with new songs. One of them being called “Everlasting Love,” which had everyone wanting more within the first minute of the new track. Sabrina is working on new music for her next project. After hearing previews of the new material live, we are excited to see what the young star will bring us next. As the show was coming to a close, Sabrina sang two fan favorites from the project, “I Don’t” and “Orion’s Belt.” Both songs had the audience singing every single lyric, and you could tell that it was a very proud moment for the talented Ms. Claudio. She closed the show with one more new track. The song reminded us of a Brazilian jazz song with a bit of tango. Sabrina brought the most energy and stage presence on this song and we saw the star in a making come alive in her last song.
Sabrina Claudio is a one-of-a-kind artist. She is original and authentic and has a classic sound. She is an old soul and it is refreshing to see such a young artist have the level of artistry that she has. Sabrina is making a name for herself, and fast, and being “Confidently Lost” is steering her in the right direction.
