Over the weekend Childish Gambino took to the Govenors Ball stage to perform an hour and forty-five minute set for all his fans. He told everyone that this would be his only performance for the rest of the year. The other information that he told fans that his next album would be his last. Leaving us and everyone else shocked and confused. On Monday June 5th he confirmed the news with Huffington Post by stating:
“There’s nothing worst than like a third sequel,” he said. “Like a third movie and we’re like, ‘Again?’ You know, I like it when something’s good and when it comes back, there’s a reason to come back, there’s a reason to do that.
“I feel like there’s gotta be a reason to do things and I always had a reason to be punk,” he added. “Being punk just always felt really good to me and we always looked at ‘Atlanta’ as a punk show and I feel like the direction I would go with Childish Gambino wouldn’t be punk anymore. As much as ‘Redbone’ is a punk song because it’s a gospel song that’s on the radio, I’m like, ‘There’s only so far you can go before you just are the radio.’”
“Redbone” isn’t just a “punk” song. The Awaken, My Love! standout is also his highest-charting single to date, peaking at No. 17 this year. Prior to that, the highest he reached was No. 64 with “V. 3005.”
With the recent success of “Redbone” and his huge plate of films and shows ranging from The Lion King to Star Wars and his hit-tv show Atlanta, Donald will be doing just fine with his retirement to music.
